President's Report
Hi Everyone,
With summer just about behind us, I feel that it was a great season for the Northern Frontier. One of the summer's highlights included Don Hill's workshop on how to paint blazes on the trail. We had the opportunity to learn from the master about the tools for scraping and painting, where to place the blazes, and the proper size of a blaze.
We were also fortunate to have the GMC's trail crew do their training at Jay Camp this year. The trail to Jay Camp is now a lot drier to hike on and my feet are a lot happier! Speaking of Jay Camp… after many years as adopter, Don Hill has decided to pass the adoption to Ken and Sharon Whitehead and myself. We are slowly but surely learning about this role. Thanks Don for all your years of hard work!
This summer I got to find out first hand what it takes to clean out a moldering privy that was full to the top. Remi Gratton generously offered his expertise on this matter and together we cleaned it out. What a feeling of accomplishment! Remi is also the new adopter for the Laura Woodward Shelter and I know that with his experience and enthusiasm, he is already doing a great job.
Ken Whitehead led two hikes this summer…the Belvidere Loop and a hike through Devil's Gulch. Thanks Ken.
And I just returned from an afternoon doing trail maintenance with Ferdinand Lauffer, brushing back the Frank Post Trail to Tillotson Camp. The GMC trail crew is now doing major renovations on this camp that was built in 1939. I can't wait to see how it turns out. Ferdinand will lead a hike there in October.
Unfortunately, all news isn't always good news. As you have probably read in the papers, some major illegal cutting of trees has taken place up at Big Jay. We hope that through awareness of this situation people will become educated about the environmental impact that this cutting has on this unique ecosystem. I was informed by some of our members who have hiked there, that the swath that was cut is very large. We will keep the membership informed through mailings and a future meeting.
For more information about the situation with the illegal cutting on Big Jay, Vermont, follow the link.
Enjoy the foliage,
Jane Williams
